This is in direct contrast to the hard-line stance that manufacturers and carriers have adopted where hacked devices are not supported.

It should not come as a total surprise that SquareTrade would be the first to offer coverage to jailbroken iPhones.  The company was previously one of the first to offer accidental damage protection.

While the steps to jailbreaking your iDevice is getting simpler, please remember not to upgrade to iOS 5.1 if you unlock with GEVEY or Ultrasn0w.

Step 1: Download the latest version of iTunes (10.6)

Step 2: Open up iTunes, and back up your device.

Step 3: Upgrade your firmware to iOS 5.1. [download links]

Step 4: Download the latest version of Redsn0w (Windows/Mac)

Step 5: Start Redsn0w, select “Jailbreak” then “Install Cydia“. Follow the steps to place your device into DFU mode.

Step 6: Now we move on to the process where you will need to repeat every time your device is switched off. This is called tethered boot. Launch Redsn0w, select “Extras”, then”Just Boot” in order to boot your device tethered.

Now that you are jailbroken on 5.1 and you’ve booted into tethered mode, you can now enjoy all your jailbreak features.

The update brings a slightly different UI style to Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich devices, so now the menus and layout fit in better with the new look of Android.

Feedback is the name of the game when you want to improve your product, and now you are able to give more targeted feedback because the app includes dedicated user feedback menus.

In my opinion the most useful part of this update is asynchronous SMS, which means that if you are offline, SMS messages will be put in a queue to be sent when you get online again.

Allegedly manufacturers, Foxconn and Pegatron have initiated production. “According to Chinese source, Foxconn Technology and Pegatron Technology started next generation of iPad assembly with Foxconn bearing 85% and Pegatron taking 15% of the production load like as iPhone 4S. Accelerated schedule is made possible by earlier Chinese New Year festival, 23rd-28th January.”

Of course none of this can be OFFICIAL until we hear a confirmation from Apple. But, unofficially this is great news for the consumers who love Apple products! There are some rumors that the new iPad could come with a higher resolution display and a brand new A6 chip.

The Absinthe Untethered Jailbreak will support below devices :

• iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0, 5.0.1 (9A405 and 9A406)
• iPad 2 Wifi/GSM/CDMA running iOS 5.0.1

The instructions to jailbreak your iPhone 4S / iPad 2 are below:

Step 1: Connect your iPhone 4S / iPad 2 with your PC via USB, and open iTunes then Restore to iOS 5.0.1.

Step 2: Download Greenpois0n Absinthe, then unzip and run the file.  Absinthe for Mac
Step 3: Connect your iPhone 4S / iPad 2 with your PC via USB.
Step 4: Connect to your wifi with internet access
Step 5: click on “Jailbreak” button
Step 6: Select the Absinthe icon after your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 reboots.  This is cause you to get a white screen
Step 7: Start your settings screen and turn on your VPN, it should already be configured on their by Absinthe, just turn it on

Step 8:  Your iPad 2 or iPhone 4S will then reboot, and you will then see the Cydia Icon.

Welcome to your jailbroken iPad 2 or iPhone 4S!!

Remember that if you have future plans of unlocking your iPhone, you will probably not want to update to iOS 5.0.1 because the unlock tool in development will not initially be compatible with iOS 5.0.1.  The safe bet is to stay on iOS 5, if possible, since the original release of iOS 5 which was pushed out in October is not being signed by Apple anymore, therefore you cannot downgrade your iPhone 4S to iOS 5.0.1 along with your sacrificed baseband.

Several notes have been published with this release.  They are below.

Update 7 :

If the Absinthe webclip shows “Error establishing a database connection”, please go to Settings, turn on VPN and wait instead.
Toggle VPN only AFTER Absinthe says it’s done, or it will not work.
VPN SHOULD error and then reboot soon. If it does not, rerun Absinthe!
If you get a strange problem, we advise you to restore your iPhone with iTunes, if you can (i.e. if you’re not on 5.0 waiting for an eventual 4S unlock).

Update 6 : @planetbing Camera roll will be empty if the jailbreak is incomplete. Rerun the app once to fix, and then another time to complete jb.

Update 5 : @idownloadblog The Absinthe jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 was released a few minutes ago. Of course, we were right on it and we already posted a tutorial on how to jailbreak the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 using Absinthe.
While I haven’t had any problem running the jailbreak – well, I had it a few minutes before everybody else – it appears that some users are having a problem when launching the Absinthe app installed on their device, which returns an “error establishing a databaseconnection“. We have a fix for that… iOS hacker PlanetBeing who helped develop the jailbreak tweeted a simple fix for the “error establishing a database connection”. Apparently, all you need to do is go to Settings > Network > VPN > ON. The VPN connection will most likely give an error and your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 should reboot shortly after. Once it’s rebooted, try launching the Absinthe webclip again.  Let us know if that works for you.

Update 4 : @comex Anyway, your best bet is always to do a full backup first. Now back to my regularly scheduled not tweeting about jailbreaks :p

Update 1 : @comex Like Spirit of old, the latest jailbreak forgets to set the “don’t delete the camera roll” flag, …But apparently this is only an issue if the jailbreak is interrupted.

An untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S would represent a project that included the talents of p0sixninja and p0d2g and potentially many others.

The internet is flowing with rumors about the iPad 3.  The latest rumors include details about the release date, operating system, and system specs.  We all know how reliable these rumors  can be , but here goes anyway.

A Japanese blog, Macotakara, reports that it has been told by sources in the US and Asia that the Apple iPad 3 is going the be released in February.  The iPad 3 will supposedly be demoed along side iOS 5.1 at an event that Apple has scheduled for early next month.

On the system side of things, the iDevice is rumored to have a quad-core A6 processor what an improved display that boasts a high resolution than earlier iterations. 

Can this information be trusted?  It depends…  The blog has had mixed results in the past.  They were accurate on some iPhone 4S specs in May 2011, but have missed on others too.

Dragon Go! Is a third-party app and does not integrate with your Android smartphone’s system apps.  This prevents you from setting alarms, sending emails, etc. as you can do with the iPhone 4S version.

Dragon Go! is available on smartphones running Android 2.1 for users that are in the United States and can be downloaded by following the link below.

If you do not reside within the US, then you can install and app like Market Enabler [Market Enabler Link] and sort of fool Market into thinking that your device is in US. Just be sure to choose USA T-Mobile when you launch it!

Spire provides the first legal port of Siri to other  iDevices by using a completely different method to obtain all of the necessary files legally and directly from Apple’s servers.  Spire is not without any problems a unique proxy set-up along with an iPhone 4S for authentication to get Siri running on the older iDevice.

Developer chpwn has some interesting comments on the port.

However, Spire is not a complete solution. Apple still requires authorization to use Siri, so information from an iPhone 4S is still required. To insert this information, Spire allows you to enter your own proxy server address. I’ve put up a list of my ideas on how you might get access to a proxy; hopefully you can figure something out.

To get a Siri proxy, chpwn suggests:

• westbaer’s SiriProxy fork
• Own an iPhone 4S too: Maybe you already own an iPhone 4S, and just want Siri on another device of yours. This is simple; you can just use the above proxy yourself.
• Find a friend: Maybe your friend has an iPhone 4S and will let you use their authentication tokens (maybe in exchange for some cool SiriProxy plugins). Then, you can share the authentication. Or, maybe you gave your relative your old iPhone when you got your iPhone 4S: now you can share your token and give them Siri.
• Pay up: It’s very likely that soon we will see for-pay services online to rent you some space on a Siri proxy, attached to one of their iPhone 4S devices. I haven’t seen anything like this yet, but I’ll keep my eye out, and I would encourage anyone who is interested to set something like this up.
• And now for something completely different: As I suggested earlier, you might be able to replace Siri entirely. A simple method might be to use Google Chrome’s speech “API” hooked up to some code to decode the Siri requests and parse Google’s result. Or, someone could hook it up to some logic backends like many of the clones available on Android: the possibilities are endless.
