A ray of sunshine for RIM as it releases its BBM Social Platform SDK.   The SDK looks to add BBM functionality to both web apps and Blackberry phones.  The added functionality will work in a couple of different ways.  Developers will be able create apps that allow users to build BBM contacts though Facebook or Twitter.  These apps will be able to send invites to users that do not have the app installed.  This provides a means that enables developers to leverage the over 45 million BlackBerry users in a very effective way.

The web functionality of the BBM Social Platform SDK includes several powerful APIs that developers will be able to leverage.  The APIs provide web developers with the following functionality:

(1)    Ability to initiate file transfers

(2)    Ability to Share applications

(3)    Ability to allow app-to-app background communication

(4)    Users can update their BBM profile status, avatar and personal message

(5)    Ability to initiate BBM chats

Users will need BlackBerry 6 in order to take advantage of these new features.  The wait is on.  Do you think this can help BlackBerry compete with Android and iOS platforms?  Please leave a comment letting us know your thoughts below.
