RIM’s OS 7 Codenamed “Highlander”; Apparently “There Can Be Only One”

RIM has been running an internal conference for their BlackBerry developers, pondering on how to speed things up with the rollout of the new upcoming operating system upgrades, but one of the main issues discussed was the BlackBerry OS7 codenamed Highlander that is supposed to attempt the joining of QNX Neutrino-based operating system with the Java that is found on the handsets.

Considering that “there can be only one” RIM pretty much ensures us that QNX will be available on their smartphones, and the OS 7 will be a healthy step forward towards that direction.

At the internal keynote, CTO David Yach, stated that elements of 6.1 and QNX will be combined to make 7 and the launch is targeted for 2012, most likely side by side to the dual-core phones. The OS 7 will be available for the PlayBook as well, becoming an important stepping stone towards the setting of common grounds between the handsets and tablet(s), facilitating the development of apps for both platforms.

The PlayBook will have an integrated Java shell that will give it the ability to run legacy BlackBerry apps, but don’t get too excited about the OS7 for now since we have no idea so far about how the QNX elements will run on the smartphones until we see them put to work.
