BlackBerry PlayBook Will Officially Run Android Apps

RIM announced today that they are going to expand their developer ecosystem with a native SDK that high-end game developers have been playing with privately and more important than this, two app layers that run of course BlackBerry apps as well as Android 2.3 apps. The Android apps will be available in BlackBerry App World, after being repacked and resubmitted by developers. All that being said, developers will be able to use Unity and Airplay for 3D modeling and animation.

This is a great move since the end result will be the expansion of the BlackBerry PlayBook app pool with   potential of hundreds of thousands apps. The only one problem is convincing developers to make the port and resubmission, and how easy could that be, we have no clue yet.

It will be interesting to see if the apps will run as smooth on the PlayBook as they do on proper Android devices. It should be noted however that the PlayBook was built with this kind of support in mind.
