Ericsson Makes HD Voice Over CDMA Possible

Most of the people don’t care about the recent advances in technology that deliver us high speed internet access, but they do care about the main function of the phone, the one for it was intended more than a century ago, to have a conversation. In call quality there has been little or no improvement over the past few years, and there were still many that appreciated more the landlines compared to the devices that they could carry around in their pockets. These things where supposed to be changed last year when operators in various countries introduced HD Voice support, but only to the GSM networks. The other 20% of the cellular networks around the world use CDMA technology, and the technology for HD Voice support was introduced as well to those networks by Ericsson.

If the typical voice call can transmit sounds in the 300-3400 Hz range, HD Voice over CDMA can handle 50Hz up to 7000Hz; the transition is being made possible by an Enhanced Variable Rate Codec Narrowband-Wideband (EVRC-NW).

Everything sounds great so far, but unfortunately there have been no plans to implement this technology so far into a mobile phone. America’s largest operator, Verizon, already announced that it plans to support voice calls over LTE and when they switch that on, it would make sense to roll out the HD Voice over that technology since will naturally provide more bandwidth. In a few years it will be possible however to see both Verizon and Sprint transitioning away from CDMA to LTE, considering that huge pile of LTE devices hitting the market.
