BlackBerry 6 Browser Got Hacked!

At the CanSecWest security conference, some well-intentioned hackers broke into a BlackBerry handset through the WebKit browser in OS 6.0 (that is found on the Torch, Style, Bold 9780 and others). Our friendly hackers where able to access the phone’s contact list and files stored on the microSD memory card, as well as write a file on the device through a separate integer overflow flaw (please note that we are aware how geeky that sounds). So far the only thing RIM manage to do is post an article in their knowledge base advising people worried about an attack to turn off Javascript.

RIM is proud of its enterprise-grade security, but from what we see, generally that security is achieved through lack of documentation rather than using the best and brightest techniques and technicians.

However the BlackBerry browser was the only one bruised up in this competition, considering that Safari on the iPhone was also tamed by the hackers. The hackers assigned for Android never showed up.

We are convinced that the security issues on the BlackBerry will get patched up and fast, considering that RIM prides itself on that aspect, and in the fragile position that is put right now, it really cannot take that many image blows.
