BlackBerry Social was announced about six months ago, and there was a big fuss about it considering that it was going to be a way for the third-party app developers to plug in the tremendous BlackBerry Messenger client, allowing users to take advantage of the chat, contacts, profiles, file transfer, groups and the invitation functions offered. One example given was that a user could chat and invite other users into a multiplayer game a lot easier.

Today, it is public in the Beta version, allowing developers to add custom fields to BBM profiles, change profile elements, like avatar pictures, embed chat inside their apps, enable file transfers between users and promote application sharing through BBM.

Users could create custom communities and chat groups as well as share an app to BBM contacts. We are aware that multiplayer gaming seems to be a big target for BBM Social, but the number of uses for the API’s will be limited by the developers’ creativity alone.

The BlackBerry Messenger will be available in April, as well as WebWorks compatibility for the developers that prefer using web languages like CSS and Javascript.
