Twitter Third-Party Apps Lose Ground To The Official Versions

Twitter managed to make a big fuss when stating that app developers should focus their attention on something else rather than building third-party Twitter clients, and considering that many third-party apps where used to develop the notoriety of any social networking service. Twitter stated that almost 90% of users where on official Twitter clients, anyway, and basically implied that the developers should take a hike.

It wasn’t just a very bold claim, apparently it was an inaccurate one as well, since TechCrunch reports that Sysomos analyzed 25 million tweets last Friday and only 58% where sent from official Twitter apps, the rest of 42 percent being owned by third-party apps. Apparently the third-party apps are losing ground to the official ones, due to the extension of services, and that is obvious if the figures from June 2009 are put in the picture. Back then 55% of the tweets where made through unofficial apps.

Although the official apps are available on all platforms and they offer anything a tweeter user might desire, we believe that many users will not feel comfortable if they are not given a choice.
