New PwnageTool bundles were released, for Jailbreaking unthetered iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.2.1 and preserving 1.59.00 respectively 5.14.04 basebands for unlocking with the latest version of Ultrasnow.

Follow the tutorial below to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS / 4 with PwnageTool for 4.2.1 and preserve baseband for unlock

  1. Download PwnageTool bundle for iPhone 4 / 3GS iOS 4.2.1 from here
  2. Download PwnageTool for 4.2.1 from here
  3. Move Pwnage Tool for 4.2.1 on your desktop, right click on it and then click on “ Show Package Contents”
  4. Go to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/ and copy the bundle for your iPhone, 4 or 3GS, previously downloaded in step 1, to this location.
  5. Go to Contents/Resources/CustomPackages/CydiaInstaller.bundle/ and paste the info.plist file.
  6. Download iOS 4.2.1 for your iDevice on your desktop [ Download Link ]
  7. Run Pwnage Tool in expert mode, select “ iPhone 3G, 3GS 4 “ and then browse for the IPSW file that you downloaded previously
  8. Just before you hit “build” you need to make sure that “Activate the Phone” is unchecked and “Cydia Installer” is checked. Now you’re ready to go, hit “Build”.

  11. After your iPhone 4, 3GS is in DFU mode, run iTunes and restore the custom jailbroken 4.2.1 firmware created by PwnageTool to your iPhone. In order to do that you neet to hold left “ALT” button ( Mac ) and click on Restore, then select your custom 4.2.1 firmware created with PwnageTool and click “Ok”
  12. After the process is completed, you can proceed with the unlocking with Untrasnow 1.2.

You can try TinyUmbrella. You can find it by searching 2-soft

I had this same problem on my 3Gs. My phone won't boot, goes into DFU mode but then has an error 1600 everytime it tries to restore using Mac iTunes 10. Tiny umbrella doesn't help nor does attempting to downgrade to 4.0.1 where I started. I'm bricked! Any help is welcome.

use latest version of iReb then choose which iDevice you have and it will stick it into 'pwned' 'DFU' mode then hit it with your custom ipsw.
