   Hallo, good tutorial! I have a jb iPhone 3G at 4.1. I've gone through the steps, using redsn0w 0.9.6b4 for windows, on Windows 7 but in XP compatibility mode (as recommended), used ipsw file for 4.2.1 that i had downloaded (but not updated to) using iTunes and pointed redsn0w in its direction, and all seemed well, the phone booted up ok... but it booted to the same fw version that I had before, 4.1 (this is confirmed on the device itself at Settings --> General --> About and through iTunes itself). I've tried this twice (the first time was using the ipsw file downloaded from this site).

     The download link is official from Apple, so there is no issue with the IPSW file. Try restoring from DFU mode and be sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed

     Thanks everyone for the good suggestions!Usual 'pebcak' situation... Adrian hit it: I was an idiot and skipped the 'updating completely normally' step. I saw that in another forum and reread the full instructions and saw that. D'OH!! ^_^ Thanks everyone!I did the required steps and was able to fully JB to 4.2.1. I did end up encountering an issue that many others saw (and a fix), so I'll share in case anyone else was bit by this and didn't see the solution:This affects iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G users on jb 4.2.1:(multitasking was installed) Springboard would crash into mobilesubstrate safe mode when switching to another open app, or when switching to an app while in another one (like opening a link for Safari within an email on Mail.app).The fix: 1) Make sure you have OpenSSH server installed, and a command-line editor like nano or vim 2) SSH into your device 3) 'cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app' 4) Run nano or vim on N82AP if iphone 3G, N72AP if ipod touch 2G 5) look for opengles-1 6) Change it to a 2 so it looks like opengles-2 7) Save the file 8) Respring (if same thing happens then reboot)

     This means that your iPhone 3G is locked with one particular carrier. You need to unlock it using ultrasnow 1.2 unlock

   so I downloaded redsnow. I upgraded to 4.2.1 but when I browse for the 4.2.1 using redsnow I can't find the file! where am I supposed to look? when I upgraded thru itunes it did not give me an option to download the firmware in a specific place where I can always retrieve it at my leasure.. help!

       You need to run redsnow in compatibility mode or as an administrator depending on your OS

    iTouch 3G - iTouch was already at 4.2.1 so downloaded and saved the firmware then downloaded Redsn0w. I extracted Redsn0w to the desktop and tried to run but it fails to identify the *.ipsw. I've used this sites link and no luck with either... Can anyone shed any light for me? ChrZ G

    first off not really a computer person. I downloaded redsnow and follow the steps but when i go to browse and choose firmware there is nothing in the file. I did have to extract it and it seems like it didn't extract anything.

      Don't know if you have already done this; but you need to download your current firmware and save it. This site is a good one for your firmware: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware Save it to a location you'll remeber ie Downloads and when you browse from Redsn0w point it to the folder and double click your saved firmware...Hope this helps

    Hey, everytime i get up to where my iphone says "uploading jailbreak data" my redsnow file stops working and windows closes it...anything i can do to fix this?I tried turning off the firewall and doing it, i tried doing it using redsnow b5 and still the same thing...help please

        Maby there are some issues with your PC OS. Try jailbreaking using a friend's computer, and if it works it means you have to re-install Windows

        Untill now, ultrasnow 1.2 is the only unlock tool and it requires baseband upgrade. However, developers at dev-team announced that they will release a way to downgrade baseband soo... it's your call

        Then you should downgrade you iPod to iOS 4.1 and jailbreak it. Sorry, but redsnow is the only jailbreak tool available for now, and if it doesn;t work for you, you have no other alternative. You can find a downgrading tutorial in the iPhone iOS section of 2-Soft.

    Hi there, I just jailbroke my iPhone 4 OS4.2.1. using RedSnOw 0.9.6b4 and succesfully installed Cydia. Problem is now the phone cant detect my SIM and I cant seem to restore OR downgrade the firmware without a saved SHSH.Is there anyway I can do a master reset of some sort to "un-jailbreak" my phone. Been at it the whole night and it's getting quite worrying.Any help would be awesome! Thanks in advanced.

    I have iphone4 IOS 4.2.1. Am stuck at the 'emergency call only' screen since I do not have at&t sim to activate it. I have been following the discussions on different forums. I guess it was too late when I discovered I shouldn't have upgraded to 4.2.1. Is there a solution out there for me. There is no way I can get an official carrier sim as I am in a remote village in Africa. My only home is that redsn0w or whatever else will unlock iphone4 IOS 4.2.1 will be out soon.     need help please. Just got an iphone 4, its 4.2.1 , so i downloaded red snow 0.9.7b2 , downloaded both the ipsw for my current firmware thingy and then it gives u the options to install cydia .. ect , and apparently im supposed to select jailbreak untethered, do that , then i have to select the other file i downloaded.. which it works , then i click next.... blah blah... the end result it basically stops half way through and says "its possible your SHSH blobs aren't on the cydia server" so , what do i do... lol , as u can tell ive never had an iphone before but im doing okay , just need a bit of help.. ( as simply as u can put it haha ) thanks

      You need to use another version of redsnow. You don't have SHSH blobs saved for unthetered.Just search for redsnow 0.9.6b4 or higher ( 0.9.6b5-6), or Navigate to iPhone iOS --> Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on our website.

    I had this all up and working fine. Last nite i plugged in my iphone 3gs 4.2.1 to charge when I woke up it was on the apple logo screen and locked up. I tried booting it tethered per these instructions but it gets stuck on reboot uploading kernel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Xab

      You can try entering your iPhone in DFU mode and restoring iOS 4.2.1. Afte that, jailbreak your device again fresh.You can jailbreak with a newer version of redsnow 0.9.6bx

    Cosmic hoping you can help! I am an experienced jailbreaker who used Blackra1n on a 3GS 3.1.3 and completely modded it out. Just got a brand new Iphone4 on 4.2.1. I am not interested in unlocks and understand that the jb is tethered. I used redsn0w 0.9.6b6 with the apple 4.1.2 firmware, and it completes the entire jailbreak process successfully. However-no Cydia icon. I checked the Install Cydia option, and even restored my home screen layout to the default. I seem to be doing most of this right but apparently I'm missing something. How can I get Cydia to show up? Any help greatly appreciated!!!

      On Page 1 reorder all your apps to the default way it was when u got your iPhone Including the new Voice memo app in the bottom right corner. Then on Page 2 have 1 app. In my case it was the facebook app. On Page 3 put all your other apps.Then Use redsn0w.This might fix your bug. If it doesn't, i suggest restoring your device to iOS 4.2.1 fresh and jb again.

    The problem is the default for 4.2.1 is to have the Voice Memo app in the Utilities folder (not in the lower right) and to have the Contacts app on the 2nd page alone. This doesn't seem to follow what you are saying exactly. Am I still missing something?

      You should try and arrange them like i said and see if you get some results. If yo don't than i suggest restoring and jailbreaking fresh

    The problem is that I don't know exactly the page1 layout you mean - there are too many apps to leave them all out of folders and on page1. Please see this article, http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_(Apple) it shows you what the real default is. Sorry to bug you again, but is there any way you can be more specific with the layout before I give up and restore? Thanks so much.

      I really can't tell if this will help you even if you get it right. My advice is to reinstall iOS 4.2.1 and then jb it again fresh and you'll get the cyda icon. Hopefully. I can't say for sure because this never happened to me. But if you do find another fix for this, please post some feedback, so others know what to do.     Having some Windows 7 issues it seems that even though my iphone is in DFU mode windows 7 dose not recognise it as such and just shows the device as a Unknown Device however on windows XP DFU mode works every time no problem has anyone else had the same experience

      This jailbreak should work for you too. Try running redsnow as administrator, or in compatibility mode.

    hi , i have a problem whit my ipod 2g i can't jailbreak it ;when i have recive the ipod i have made update to firewall version 4.2.1 and now when i try to jailbreak (i folow all the steps) at the finish it say "done"but my ipod is stuck whit a blue screen and nothing

    hw do u run redsnow as administrator its not an application its a file

      Navigate to iPhone iOS -> Jailbreak iPhone, iPad and iPod and you'll find there links to all jailbreaks, including Verizon's iPhone iOS 4.2.6

    I am getting sooooo frustrated! Ive downloaded redsnow and ive downloaded the firmware like 4 times from 4 different places but its all the same! There are no .ipsw files! If i go into the firmware folder i just find .dfu files. I tried changing them to .ipsw files and then browsing for them with redsnow but it just says "unable to recognise specified IPSW" ...!! I am running it as administrator and in XT compatibility mode.. Wot the hell am I doing wrong!

    Hello,I have a 3G and the jailbreak was a success. However, now the "Sections" and "Manage" tabs, everything is blank, including the Packages. How can I fix this issue? Can I simply re-jailbreak my phone to fix this problem? If so, do I have to restore my firmware before jailbreaking again? Thanks for the help....-Sean

    Everything works up until the download. I get it into DFU and then it starts to download, but halfway through it gives me an error. Any idea what to do or if redsnow will be updated to fix that?

    Hi, Great tutorial I jailbreak my iphone 4 ios 4.2.1 yesterday. I have cydia and i installed ultrasn0w to unlock my carrier but unfortunately it doesn't work for me. some times a pop up comes up says "carrier settings update" i click update but still nothing happens. is there is any other ways to unlock my carrier i'm flying to LA soon and i need my i phone to work.Thanks in advance.       You can run as administrator or use Windows xp compatibility mode if you think that is the fault, but redsnow works just fine on Windows 7 too
